This story represents the deepest meaning of our work
Lucy’s story reminds us, once again, how essential it is to be able to rely on timely, compassionate, and accessible medical support when far from home.
Lucy, an American student at John Cabot University in Rome, contacted Dr. Andrea Guerriero, medical advisor for John Cabot University and Chief Medical Officer at MedinAction, after experiencing her first symptoms while she was abroad.
From that moment, a rapid process of medical guidance and assistance was activated, bringing her back to Italy and accompanying her first to UPMC Salvator Mundi International Hospital and then to San Camillo Forlanini Hospital, where hepatologist Valerio Giannelli initiated the tests and examinations that led to the diagnosis of Wilson’s disease, a rare genetic disorder that had caused acute liver failure.
Lucy was later saved thanks to a liver transplant performed by Professor Giuseppe Maria Ettorre, Director of General Surgery and Organ Transplantation, together with his team.
For us, this story represents the deepest meaning of our work: being there when it truly matters, facilitating access to care in a foreign country, reducing language barriers, and supporting international patients, students, and families in their most delicate moments.
We are deeply grateful to the doctors, nurses, and all the healthcare professionals involved, as well as to the generosity of the donor and the donor’s family. We wish Lucy all the very best in her recovery journey. 💙
